How to Decide Your Bridal Hairstyle

Picking a hairstyle is almost as important as your dress. Your hair is your crown, and it should accent your best features and fit your personality! Start by looking at pictures and creating a mood board of hairstyles you like, whether it’s up, down, or somewhere inbetween.

As a hairstylist, I recommend asking yourself the following questions to help narrow down to the style that will best fit you, your style and your wedding day.

How do you normally style your hair?

You want to feel comfortable on your day, so if you commonly  wear your hair down, consider keeping a similar style for your wedding. Feels a bit too casual? Add a touch of formality by making it a half up/half down and adding a hairpiece. To get a full, flowing look I recommend adding extensions to fill out your curls; this will make your hair look full and can also add some length.

How can your hairstyle compliment your dress?

If you have chosen a high neck/backline wearing an updo will show off those details. Alternatively if your neck line is low, having your hair down will frame your dress.

Your hairstyle can also match the vibe of your dress and wedding day. If your dress is sleek and your wedding is in an urban space then a simple, yet stunning hairstyle will fit perfectly. Or if your dress is adjourned in lace and the wedding is outdoors, then a loose, romantic hairstyle would go well.

What can your hair length and density offer?

If you’re looking into vintage waves, most images you see have extensions built in.  If your hair is on the short side an updo might be tricky. Get the idea?  When looking at pictures, look for similar hair length and thickness as your own. Once you’ve decided a style, book a trial appointment with your stylist to see the ability to recreate the look. The stylist can try similar versions to see what works well or offer suggestions to get the exact look you are after.

Will you be dancing the majority of the night?

Having your hair off your neck and out of your face is the best feeling when hot from dancing. If you choose to have your hair down, during the wedding, make a plan for a style change for the reception. Pull your curls up into a high pony and add an accessory like a clip or pearls to keep your bridal worthy.
